Dr. C S Ramachandra

Dr. C. S. Ramachandra is based in Bangalore, India. Got his Master of Dental Surgery in ORTHODONTICS from Government Dental College Bangalore and was in teaching profession for the last 30 years (1988–2018).Trained large number of dental graduates and guided more than 50 post graduate students in Orthodontics. Since 2012 developed keen interest in "DAMON SYSTEM" and in the last seven years treated more than 500 cases using the same. He has written a book/atlas - ‘Damon System an Indian Experience’. In this book he has shared in great detail management of 12 cases of varying type of malocclusions, using Damon System. He is also a diplomat of Indian Board of Orthodontics.

Damon System & Arch development:

To quote Dr. Alan Bagden-“The balance of the forces of the tongue, lips, cheeks and oro-facial musculature are what create the natural arch form associated with the Damon System. The arch form used in the preformed arch wires is the average arch form that Dwight Damon discovered after analyzing hundreds of finished cases. However, it is the balance of the musculature, NOT the force of the wire that dictates the arch form. The wire merely guides the movement of the teeth into the arch form which is created as a result of the above mentioned oro facial musculature balance”.

The above lines are the soul of Damon System. Using Damon brackets and wires, but employing traditional mechanics will allow for getting partial benefits of the passive ligation system. There is a full complement of bracket torque selections, wire selections as well as additional auxiliaries which allow the clinician to utilize the system to its full extent. The most important component of the system is however, the education of the doctor in understanding the shift in mechanics and treatment philosophy of the Damon System. Without question the most critical variable which determines the success of treatment with Damon System is the clinician himself.

Dr. Gurkeerat Singh

Dr. Gurkeerat Singh, did his M.Orth in 2001 and is registered with the Royal College of surgeons, London as well as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He is a diplomate of the Indian Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Singh has over fifty publications in various Indian and foreign journals to his credit as well as “The Textbook of Orthodontics” and a “Mini Atlas on Orthodontics”. He has presented papers and has been a guest speaker at various national & inter-national conferences and student conventions. He started his teaching career in 1998 and is presently the Professor and head of the department of orthodontics and Dentofacial orthopedics at Sudha Rustagi College of Dental Sciences and Research, Faridabad, Haryana. His areas of interest include - digital orthodontics, micro-implants, lasers, fixed bite jumping appliances, and self-ligation brackets.

Orthodontic Treatment Under 12 Months: Treatment efficiency or Luck

As Orthodontists, we are well aware that decreasing treatment duration will not just increase patient acceptance to the proposed treatment but will add to the foot fall in our practices. Experimentally, both invasive and non-invasive methods have been used to decrease treatment duration. Claims of success rate in most cases range from 10 to 40% depending upon the method as well as the author. At times controversial, yet most of these methods are primarily experimental and usually never brought into day to day practice and hence are of no consequence to an average clinician.

Now if we were to propose certain clinical protocols which would decrease treatment duration, would they be adopted by the practicing orthodontist?

The presentation aims at showcasing cases which were finished within 12 to 14 months and are aimed at establishing clinical protocols which will aid in correction of malocclusions relatively faster.

He is a diplomate of the Indian Board of Orthodontics and has the unique distinction of having a fellowship from all four Royal College of Surgeons-Edinburgh, England, Ireland and Glasgow.

He is the recipient of the Best Clinical Paper Award thrice at the 47 th , 48th and the 53 rd Indian Orthodontic Conference in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Kochi.

He is the winner of the George Jacob Award for excellence in clinical innovation presented by the Indian Orthodontic Society for the year, 2014.

He has also been selected for the recently introduced IOS Exchange program to the University of Western Australia, Perth for the year 2017.

He is peer reviewer for the Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society. He is one of the key opinion leaders for ORMCO India pvt.ltd and a regular invited speaker in the national and international forum.

Variable Torque Mechanics

Any developing science evolves, and as one of the fastest growing dental specialties, Orthodontics has been doing so in the past 100 years of its existence. In its century of existence there has been a lot of landmarks in its evolution, but very few can match the clinical impact made by the variable torque, versatile, self-ligation appliance and the temporary anchorage devices.

The aim of any clinical research is to improve the quality of treatment delivered, together with the addition of precision, broadening the horizons of treatment and improve the compliance factor for both the patient and the clinician.

Dr. Prasad Chitra has completed two Memberships (M.OrthRCS and MDORCPS) in Orthodontics, from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 2000. He has been associated with the Army College of Dental Sciences at Secunderabad a NAAC grade- A, institution and is presently Professor and Head of Orthodontics. He has been an invited speaker at CDE programs, IDA meetings, PG conventions and National Orthodontic conferences.

The Airway and Passive self ligation- Symbiosis at its best

Orthodontics as a speciality is slowly progressing towards treatment of mild to moderate problems using non extraction approaches. Patients in the Indian scenario frequently present with extensive crowding, increased overjet and deep bites. Class II correction of retruded mandibles with arch expansion to align the dentition is frequently required in such cases.

The Damon system is uniquely poised to enable non extraction therapy in a significant number of patients due to its feature of lateral arch development. Additionally, use of passive self ligating appliances like Damon also produce positive changes in the airway post treatment. This unique facet of the Damon appliance will be highlighted in the presentation with a series of cases. Additionally, the AdvanSync2 Class II corrector helps in lower jaw relocation with positive effects on the airway. The importance of airway assessment and the positive effects of passive self ligation and Class II correctors on airway dimensions will be highlighted.
